Ultimate Power Couple: Hail to the Chiefs of Muscle

Aaron and Darielle Singerman, the CEO and First Lady of RedCon1

You’ve heard the phrase, “behind every great man is a great woman.” It certainly applies in the case of Aaron Singerman and his company, RedCon1. His wife Darielle has played a major role in its success from its inception three years ago, helping to grow it into one of the largest companies in the industry in record time. Now, Aaron and Darielle are pitted against each other in a 12-week contest to see who can get into better shape. It’s a friendly rivalry— sort of. I spoke to this power couple to learn how they got to where they are today.

Aaron, I know you are the owner and CEO of RedCon1. Darielle, what is your position in RedCon1 and what do you do for the company?

Darielle: I run a section on our site, http://www.redcon1.com, called “Mommy’s Corner.” We have three boys, and I’ve been able to find a great balance between fitness and being a mom that I share with other women out there.

Aaron: Mommy’s Corner is really a big deal for us. Bodybuilding is my first love. It was easier for me to make waves in the bodybuilding field. It’s always been mostly young guys. When I started RedCon1 in 2016, my goal was to make it the biggest sports supplement company in the world. You can’t do that if you’re missing half the world’s population. You have to reach everyone. I wanted to include women somehow, and this was our way to do it.

Darielle: The company slogan is “a higher state of readiness” in any situation, whether you’re a bodybuilder, a Navy SEAL, or a mother. I wanted women to see what was possible for them.

How did you two meet, and did you hit it off immediately?

Aaron: It was 2011. I’d seen a picture of her on Facebook, and she was also in your magazine as MD Babe of the Month around that time. She was hot, which is what initially got my attention. She’d just placed sixth in Bikini at the NPC Junior USA. I messaged her and told her not to be discouraged, you’re gonna get your pro card. We went back and forth, and I used all my best lines! We wound up meeting at the Junior Nationals soon after, where she got third place, and we did hit it off right away. We hung out the whole weekend and by the time we were leaving, I knew this was serious. I knew this wasn’t just some girl I hung out with for a weekend. I could see myself marrying her and having babies with her.

Darielle: We started dating immediately after that. I was in Tampa; he lived in Houston. Three months later he moved to Tampa, and we got pregnant with Asher three months after that.

Aaron: I’ve had such a crazy life before Darielle, with drugs and just chaos in general. With any other woman, it would have been a total disaster. I wouldn’t have been ready for a real relationship, or to raise a child. Everything worked out. We had Asher earlier than we would have, but it just pushed us to do things quicker. We got married while she was seven months pregnant, and the rest is history. It all worked out.

Darielle, as a top national-level Bikini competitor, was it especially difficult for you to watch your body change through that first pregnancy?

Darielle: After I did those two shows, I went through a terrible rebound that most girls who aren’t dieting correctly experience. I was far from being in my best shape when I got pregnant. I say that getting pregnant rebooted or fixed my metabolism. That pregnancy wasn’t the ideal “fit pregnancy” that I had later on, but I learned a lot from it. Lifting heavy and eating clean offers so many benefits to the hormonal issues women go through postpartum. I’ve made so many improvements to my physique since I had Asher. I look much better now as a 32-year-old mother of three than I did at 25 before my kids. That’s why I’m so passionate about this subject. Like so many other women, I used to think your body is ruined forever once you have children. You’ll certainly never get a six-pack again. Then I started following women in the industry who were mothers yet looked fantastic. Others never talked about being moms or having kids, and I thought they were missing out on an opportunity to educate and inspire. You can take care of your kids and still take care of yourself too.

What is a typical day like for each of you, and how do you manage to fit in training and meals?

Aaron: For me it’s relatively easy. I’ve been doing this since I was 13 years old so I know what I should and shouldn’t eat. I have the advantage of a food-prep service that delivers my meals, so they are all portioned out with the right macros. I have a regimented day and a set schedule. I do 30 minutes of cardio a day before heading to the office. After work, I do my weight training and another 30 minutes of cardio and I’m home by 7 to spend a little time with our kids before we put them to bed.

Darielle: I wake up at 4:45 to do my first 30 minutes of cardio before the kids wake up. Eating right is second nature to me. I do my own food prep at night and cook in bulk. I do my training either in the morning or afternoon. Our 3-year-old does boxing classes three times a week, so I usually train while he does those. It’s like the game Tetris sometimes. I look at my week and figure out where I can fit my training in. When Neil Hill is in town, he trains me twice a week.

Wow, having the same coach as Flex Lewis, William Bonac and Big Ramy sounds like an unfair advantage.

Darielle: That’s why I’m going to win!

You two are competing against each other in a 12-week challenge. Where did the idea come from, and what are the rules?

Aaron: We’ve done a series of challenges with RedCon1 called the Readiness Trials about every quarter. We give away money for the most dramatic transformation. The first one was $10,000, and now we’re up to giving away $50,000 cash and also tons of prizes. I realized recently that we’ve never had consistent content for the contestants to involve them more. I wanted to do something unique, and also do it with Darielle. I’ve learned over the years that I can’t advise her in any way, or check in on her like, hey, did you do your cardio this morning? Or, are you sure you should be eating that? It never goes over well. Even if I root for her, it can be misconstrued. I could tell her she looks awesome, and she might say, oh, so I looked bad before?

Wow, I just nearly passed out from déjà vu. This is eerily similar to exchanges my wife and I have had for many years.

Aaron: I thought it would be really cool to go in the opposite direction: me versus her, and I can talk shit to her! She seems to like that more than me pushing her. I will offer her doughnuts, and I sent her chocolates for Valentine’s Day, right in the middle of our challenge, with a note telling her to enjoy them. I’m an extremely competitive person. The cool part is that people are choosing either Team Aaron or Team Darielle and following along with our journey as they get in great shape with us. They want to see who will win.

Darielle: I think it helps the contestants get more involved, and it keeps them accountable. The response has been incredible.

Final question: How do you decide who wins, and what do you each get if you win?

Aaron: Initially we were going to judge this purely by DEXA body composition testing before and after. Now, we will also post before-and-after photos and let the people decide by a vote. For all the Readiness Trials, we’ve always chosen the top 10 finalists internally and then posted their photos to be voted on. If she wins, she gets to take her mom or a friend to a spa vacation while I watch our three crazy boys. I had to ask people for ideas on what I would get. Some said I should get a trip, but I travel too much as it is and I’m not interested in being away from my family any more than I already am. They also suggested I buy something outrageous for myself like a Bugatti, but Darielle never tells me what I can and can’t buy anyway. So if I win, she has to wear a shirt every day for a month with me flexing on it that says, “My husband is sexier than me.” She has to wear it everywhere she goes, even to school functions and meetings for the boys.

Darielle: We’re both taking this very seriously, like an actual competition.

Aaron: This is pretty much my Mr. Olympia.

It sounds like a lot of fun, to be honest. Maybe other couples will be inspired to do something like this too. May the best man or woman win!
