A recent study at Baylor College of Medicine examined the effects of oral N-carbamylglutamate (NCG) supplementation on growth rate in piglets. NCG is an activator of arginine synthesis.
A recent one-year study led by Dr. Christopher Gardner at the Stanford University Medical School provides more support for the very low-carb (ketogenic) weight-loss diets. Gardner and colleagues randomly assigned 311 overweight/obese women to follow the very low-carb Atkins diet, the moderate-carb Zone diet, the traditional high-carb/low-fat diet, or extremely low-fat Ornish diet.
It's well established that serious athletes need more protein than sedentary people. However, it's unclear whether a very high protein intake offers advantages over a moderately high protein intake.
Fats are under appreciated, misunderstood and often considered the nutritional bad boys of the macronutrients. The reality is that fats are essential to health and if used properly can be a huge asset in getting lean, becoming huge, and staying healthy. Part of the "staying healthy" that would be of interest to bodybuilders is keeping joint inflammation low, the cardiovascular system healthy, the immune system strong, and the metabolic rate optimal.
The importance of adequate protein is largely ignored by traditional nutritionists. However, it's now well-establishedthat1) higher protein/lower carbohydrate diet favorably affectsbody mass and composition independent of energy intake
The American Heart Association (AHA) has told us that we should follow a low-fat/low-protein/high-carb diet. However, a massive Danish study clearly refutes AHA´s nutritional recommendations. Dr. Jytte Halkjaer and colleagues at the Copenhagen University Hospital investigatedthe associations between macronutrients (i.e., carbs, proteins, fats) and subsequent changes in waistcircumference ina large, population-based cohort of middle-aged women and men.
