I’ve read that serum (blood) binding proteins, mainly IGF-bp3 (insulin-like growth factor, binding protein-3) with the acid labile unit, act as carriers to greatly increase the half-life of the IGF-1 molecule in the blood. I know that if injected subcutaneous, IGF-1 is cleared from the blood in minutes. If bound to binding proteins, IGF-1 can freely dissociate, acting as a reservoir when needed. I do understand completely that only free drug can interact with receptors, but what is, in your expert opinion, the best form of IGF-1 to take?             The problem is, how do you we know how much IGF-1 (if any) will dissociate from the proposed binding protein (bp3) to actually act to cause growth? At least when you inject free IGF-1, we know that there will be some binding (despite the short half-life) to open IGF-1 receptors. (I suggest individuals try taking their IGF-1 right after training, since damaged muscle tissue will display the greatest density of IGF-1 receptors). Additionally, long-R3 IGF-1 (an IGF-1 analog that’s manufactured by the Australian company GroPep), can avoid being bound to IGF-1 binding proteins and thus being inactivated. This unique ability enables long-R3 IGF-1 to prolong its serum half-life from 20 minutes to about eight hours.

I am hesitant as to what steroid to take for my first cycle. I want good gains in strength and size with as few side effects as possible. I’d also like to keep a good amount of the gains after I stop.

I would suggest a mild cycle of two compounds that do not inhibit your natural testosterone production. Primobolin depot and Winstrol depot come to mind. Try taking 200 milligrams of Primobolin per week along with 50 milligrams of Winstrol every other day for a total of 12 weeks.                How do you keep blood pressure down (mine is 150-90)? I am six feet tall and I went from 225-250 pounds in five months.Any blood pressure with a diastolic (lower number) pressure of 90 or over should be considered high. The diastolic pressure is the pressure in the left ventricle of the heart (the chamber that pumps blood to all the muscles and body organs) when that chamber is relaxed (not actively contracting). Therefore, if the pressure in the left ventricle is too high when the heart is relaxed (diastolic pressure), it means the pressure exerted on the kidney tubules all the time (when the heart is contracting and relaxing) is way too great. Elevated pressure on the kidney tubules can result (over time) in damaged or non-functional kidneys.              If your blood pressure is indeed high (as you indicate), you should see a physician so he can prescribe medications to lower your dangerously high blood pressure.  Note:  ACE inhibitors are among the safest drugs (with the fewest side effects) that are available today to lower high blood pressure.   You seem to be one of the few intelligent bodybuilders. My first question may seem silly. Is it true that if a man abstains from sexual activity, he’ll have more free testosterone on reserve for more massive muscle gains? (I am talking about a drug-free individual).  Also, what is your opinion on Mike Mentzer’s Heavy Duty training?             Abstaining from sexual activity (whether it be sexual intercourse or masterbation) will not increase free or bound testosterone levels. The only thing sexual abstention has been shown to do is increase aggressiveness (because you’ll be so pissed off that you haven’t had sex or had some form of “release”).              As for Mike Mentzer’s Heavy Duty workout philosophy, I believe his theories are essentially correct, but like every other radical theorist, he endorses an approach that’s a bit too radical. The true strength of the theory lies in a more moderate approach. Instead of doing one set per body part, I recommend doing several exercises per body part and one or two sets per exercise.

I heard there are several new anabolic steroids on the market from that company, Quality Vet, that you mentioned in one of your columns. Can you please keep me up to date on their newest products?

Quality Vet (the Australian company that produces and exports anabolic steroids into Mexico) has developed several interesting new products:(1)   Oximetalon (oxymethelone), also known as Anadrol-50 (manufactured by Unimed) in the United States, comes in a 100-count bottle of 75- milligram tablets (as opposed to the usual 50-milligram tabs in all other versions).  (2)   Quality Vet (QV) also has a new 10-milligram D-BOL (methandrostenelone) tablet in a 100-count bottle. It also has an injectable D-BOL (methandrostenelone) with a 25mg/mL strength in 10mL bottles.(3)   Oxandrovet is QV’s new five-milligram oxandrolone (BTG makes a 2.5mg version called Oxandrin in the U.S.).  (4)   Stanazolic (stanazolol) comes in 10-milligram tablets (instead of the usual two-milligram tabs found around the world in the popular anabolic known as Winstrol). Stanazolic also comes in an injectable version that contains 50mg/mL (20mL) or 100mg/mL (10mL).
