IS IT IN YOU?
Craig, I never was a big fan of yours until whatever you've been doing lately. Man, you look fantastic! You should be in the top five in the O for sure. I read in MD that you drink a lot of Gatorade for the carb calories. Now, if I do this and take Creatine, do I still need to drink a gallon of water a day?
Ahh, man, I appreciate all those words of encouragement and I definitely appreciate your opinion of my physique. It means a lot to me when the fans seem to notice that I am growing and progressively getting better and better.
You know, the whole Gatorade idea is very, very simple. For people who need extra calories and are already eating as much as they can, Gatorade works great because it has a lot of calories in the form of simple sugars. I drink two or two and a half gallons of water a day, and I use Creatine made by Pinnacle. Their Creatine is a derivative of a different sugar carrier, so it's not necessary for me to worry about any extra water intake. If you're using a brand of Creatine with Gatorade, always be sure to drink at least another gallon of water a day. It can only help you.
Hey Craig, congrats on your NOC placing and after-show party success, but dude, I've got a serious bone to pick with you. I saw your back workout in MuscleMag International and was shocked to see that you do T-bar rows on that prissy T-bar machine. Dude, that machine is not for us bodybuilders. If you want a back like mine and Ronnie's, you've gotta use the T-bar row without that pad. It'll hurt your lower back just a little, but dude, you'll get the back you've been needing.
Yeah, well, you have to remember that those shots in Muscle Mag are actual training shots. They're not done with fancy lighting and poses for the camera. They may not look as pretty and I may not look as huge and thick as normal, but that's only because it's not done with all the bells and whistles, so to speak, like most other photo shoots. I do use the normal T-bar without the pad. I just happened to use the pad on that particular day. And I do agree, if you want a big back, you have to lift some good old-fashioned free weights. So just to let you know, I agree with you 100 percent, my friend, and I do the T-bar without the pads because I think it's necessary for a big ol' back.
My back training consists of 16 to 20 sets and I do 12 to 20 reps per set. I do T-bars as well as barbell rows. Every workout is different. That day, what you saw in the magazine just happened to be one particular workout. The next time I go to the gym I might start with bent-over rows on the Smith machine first and then go to the T-bar row without the pads. The next time I may do the one with the pads first and then the T-bar last after pull-downs. It's always different. Again, I agree that the T-bar without the pad is definitely necessary. That is a good old trick that Melvin Anthony taught me long ago.
EAT CHEAT
I would like to know how you stay full before a contest. I liked your physique at the 2002 Olympia; you were really full and hard. Could you give me some advice on how to be in this kind of condition even with a low-carb diet? I don't compete, but I hate looking flat and small like a skinny puke when I'm ripped.
Honestly, I am a firm believer in cheat days. When I say cheat days, those are days you bombard your diet with calories consisting of sugar, fat, sodium and things that you normally wouldn't eat on a diet. If you're having trouble staying full while you're training, I suggest throwing a cheat day in every third day and eat stuff like a whole pizza once in a while. It will speed your metabolism up, make you leaner and will fill your muscle out with nutrients that it's been missing.
Periodic cheat days will make your total state of mind and quality of life better, because anytime you deprive yourself of fats and sugars for long periods of time, you will get flat, a little brain dead and you won't feel as healthy.
For the 2002 Olympia, I simply dieted down and ate a cheat meal the night before the show. I had Taco Bell the night before, and the morning of the show I had steak, eggs pancakes- the whole works.
If you are not competing and you are just trying to stay lean, I would just simply throw in a cheat day or a cheat meal every third day. That'll fill your muscles back out.
JACKED IN THE A.M.
I work out in the morning before I go to work at 5:45 am. My question is that all the diet/eating plans always refer to people who work out in the evening. I would like to hear about a plan that's based around a schedule similar to mine. There are a lot of us who are on this type of time schedule, so it would be great to hear some suggestions.
You actually have an advantage. All you need to do is simply wake up early enough to make sure you have a nice meal, consisting of protein and a lot of simple and complex carbohydrates to fuel your workout. Make sure you have that one good meal in before you train.
Look at it like this: You have the entire day to eat and fill up and heal your muscle that you tore down in the morning. There are actually quite a few bodybuilders who train first thing in the morning and then use the day as the core healing process. The morning is when most pros will train because they can rip down separate muscle groups and heal up separate muscle groups throughout the entire day.
You could start your morning off with a cheese omelet (a dozen egg whites, three whole eggs, cheddar jack cheese), toast, a bowl of oatmeal with honey and raisins and a Juiced Creatine shake. Just remember to get a sufficient amount of protein and carbohydrates. A good diet is all it takes, brother.
TITUS. CRAIG TITUS.
Are you the "Undercover Pro Bodybuilder" talking all that shit online? Everyone says it's you!
Yeah, I've been hearing that since day one. I know BodyBuilding.com loves it because they get a lot of traffic on their site from it. Whoever's writing it is a fairly decent writer. I've noticed they've tried to copy several different writing styles. I read the column because I'm curious about what's being said next and also because people do think it's me. Sorry to say, though, it's not me. Anything I write or say I put my name on, and that's the way I've always been. To be totally honest with you, most magazines are hiding the truth of what's going on with some athletes and this guy is the only one that's writing the real stuff. I kind of like the column myself, but it's definitely not me. I've answered this question millions of times, so people are just going to think what they want.
LAND OF THE Rx, HOME OF THE FDA
Craig, you could give more insight on this than anyone, so I decided to ask what your thoughts are on Victor Martinez going to jail. Can he make a comeback as an athlete, or is he now "damaged goods?" Also, speaking of jail, what do you think about this fucking ban on ephedra!? Does anyone realize that if a cop stops you and you've got ephedra in your car, you can go to prison?! That is fucked up!
Let's go to the ephedra half of the question first. I'm gonna sum this up in a way that will make the United States government look like fools. Why don't we all go have a cup of coffee, do a shot of tequila and smoke a cigarette? All of those are legal substances, and to ban ephedra is an absolute friggin' joke! They are making fools out of themselves. Tobacco is legal and it's the number one killer in the United States. Alcohol is legal and it's the most harmful drug in the world. You can get caffeine in coffee, sodas and other drinks, and it's almost the same exact stimulant as ephedra. I just think it's absolutely ridiculous!
The ban will create a huge underground market where people won't know what the hell they're getting. It's absolutely hilarious. As great as this country is, this is the most idiotic shit I've ever seen in my life! I'll say it one more time. Tobacco and alcohol are legal. Ephedrine is not. This is retarded!
As far as Victor Martinez- seeing him going to jail is a sad, sad thing. I can feel for him better than anybody. You have to be a very strong-minded person to come back after something like that. You see, the difference between me and these other guys that have gotten in trouble is that I knew enough not to try to hide anything. I talked about it and got it out in the open and used it as publicity to let people know that my case was just idiotic. I'm a man, I'll do my time and come back and be bigger and better than ever. I used it as the route to publicize myself and keep myself in the magazines. I'm not saying that Victor's hid it or lied about it, but the magazines haven't said anything about his situation and that just causes people to speculate about what's really going on. His case is no different than the same old bogus steroid charges like all the others.
The problem in Victor's case is that when he gets out of jail, he's not a free man any more. He will be on parole and probation. His professional competing days are done, because with parole and probation come drug testing, and he's just not going to be able to compete as a professional bodybuilder. Those days are done. And it's a sad, sad thing because Victor was a really good bodybuilder.
Also, it won't give me a chance to beat him. I wanted redemption and I don't think that's ever going to happen. There are plans for him to do the GNC, and it's all fine and dandy that Victor has the kind of attitude where he thinks he's going to be able to compete, but the fact of the matter is, what the government will do is this: He'll get out, they'll let him get comfortable, he'll start getting ready for a show and then they'll just simply pop him with a drug test. Then it's all over. Victor should just start thinking about running his gym and making money in other areas, because quite honestly, he's going to make a big mistake if he tries to compete professionally. They'll just let him get comfortable and then they'll test him and then his problems are going to be majorly compounded. It's a never-ending cycle of hell. Believe me, I can speak from experience.
Plus, Victor still has the INS to deal with when he gets out, because he's not a citizen. From what I understand, he's going to have problems with the INS like Paul Dillett did. Paul Dillett's stuck in Canada and doesn't come into the United States because his visa ran out years ago. I think Victor may be in the same boat. I may be wrong and I apologize if I am, but I do believe he has INS problems. The fact remains that when Victor Martinez gets out of jail he will be on supervised release, and that's gonna kill all chances of him competing for at least the next five years.
MD SPECIAL EXCLUSIVE
Craig Titus: Road to the Arnold Classic
Journal Entry: Mid-January
Well, I'm nine weeks out, and I'm working with Chad Nicholls. I'm very, very happy about where I'm at right now, other than the fact that I've got the flu and I'm on my back for 48 hours. I looked in the mirror yesterday and saw that I'm where I would normally be five weeks out, but we're nine weeks out! This is gonna be the hardest, the fullest and the roundest I've ever been.
I heard that the Arnold Classic lineup is Jay, Chris, Gunter, Markus Ruhl, Dexter Jackson and Kevin Levrone. If that is the final lineup, I don't see any reason why Gunter, Markus, or Kevin should beat me, especially the way Kevin has been coming in. I never thought I would say this, but those three individuals should be behind me and I'm planning on putting them behind me with no doubt at the Arnold Classic.
I see Chris winning the show, Dexter taking second, Jay in third, and me in fourth. That's the way I see the placements.
I'm really excited about it. Honestly, I'd feel better if a few guys weren't doing it; because of their political connections, they seem to get places they shouldn't. All I can do is be the best I can be and hope the judging is honest and fair and not about politics. If that happens, I'll be putting Gunter, Levrone, and Markus Ruhl behind me.
I've worked with a lot of nutritionists over the years, but I like Chad because he believes in the same things I believe in. This is one time I'm not hesitating in using any of the training philosophies he's got for the show. Anything he tells me is exactly the same thing I would be doing, give or take a few different methods. It's working remarkably! I'm round, and let's not forget that I had the skin all cut off my chest, so I have no skin on my chest anymore. I'm still getting scar tissue worked on that remained underneath my nipples, and hopefully that will all be gone before the show. My doctor's assured me that it will be.
The after-party is in motion and all ready to go. The two main sponsors are Pinnacle, and of course, Muscular Development magazine. The after-party is following the Arnold Classic, right after the banquet, and goes until 6 a.m., so if people want to go somewhere else and come to the party later, that's fine. We're expecting a max capacity of 3,000 people and it's gonna be a great celebration that night. Especially for my wife, Kelly, because I truly believe that she is the next Susie Curry. Kelly should dominate now. It's her time to shine.
My home gym is done, so all I've been doing lately is concentrating on putting this party together and training for the show. My training was good, and then when I found out who was in the lineup, it got even better. I absolutely refuse to come into the show in any way, shape or form less than what it will take to beat Kevin, Gunter and Markus. I truly believe that at this point in my career I have a better physique than the three of them, and I will display it at the Arnold. I just don't see Gunter with a better body than mine. I think Markus Ruhl is a big man, but just not that pleasing, and I think Kevin's days are done. I want to be in the mix. I want to be up there and I'll be very, very disappointed if I'm not.
After the Arnold, I'm going to San Francisco the following weekend, then to Melbourne, Australia, after that. Then I'm done until the latter part of the year with the GNC, the Olympia and Amsterdam. Obviously, I'm peaking for the Arnold Classic, but that's not going to affect any future shows. Anybody who's seen me compete knows I get better from show to show. The only reason I'm skipping the Ironman is because I wasn't able to start my training and dieting until December 7, so it didn't give me enough time to prepare for the Ironman. But it is perfect timing for the Arnold Classic.
I'm very happy with the press I've been getting lately. MD has been very good to me. I'm still waiting on my cover to come out. My wife just got the cover of the swimsuit edition of Ironman, so I'm really proud of her. We're building a female bodybuilder website right now; the name will be www.promuscle-worship.com. The site is being designed, women are being recruited and contracts are being drawn up. Look for it in the future.
