The 2007 Mr Olympia prejudging can best be described as "unpredictable";
in the sense that precontest favorites, Ronnie Coleman and Jay Cutler, find
themselves trailing the competition going into tomorrow night's finals.
Reigning Mr Olympia, Jay Cutler, seems to have made a
miscalculation in his diet and dehydrating techniques because his midback,
lower back, and side leg are holding considerable amounts of water. Likewise, his right quad looks to be
considerably smaller than the left. When
the prejudging ended, I felt that Cutler was no better than 3rd; behind
Victor Martinez and Dexter Jackson.
Dexter should be praised for being the most conditioned
athlete of the evening. Combined with a
few extra well-placed pounds of muscle, Dexter seems to have found himself in a
battle with Victor Martinez for the number one spot.
Victor Martinezcertainly
brought his A-game to the stage; leaving no stone unturned. He has everything it takes to be Mr Olympia-Mass,
Shape, and Symmetry-and it looks like Victor capitalized on his genetic gifts
on this particular evening. Can Victor
be harder? I still think he hasn't
peaked 100%; however, his 97% was still good enough to best the other Olympia
competitors in this writer's mind.
When considering who might snag the 4thposition,
we have to consider both Melvin Anthony and Dennis Wolf. Marvelous Melvin redeemed his Atlantic City
Pro debacle and brought a tight, symmetrical, package to the stage
tonight. His posing was effortless and
his dry, ripped, physique told tales of many hours of grueling cardio. Dennis Wolf, who didn't even place at last
years Olympia, found himself in the enviable spot of crowd favorite. Every time the judges called the"Big Bad"
Wolf onto the stage, people went nuts.
In my eyes, it looks as though Melvin will snag 4th (moving
up one spot from last year) and Wolf will settle for the 5th
position. With a few refinements to his
already polished physique, Wolf will be hard to beat next year.
Rounding out the top six is 8-time Mr Olympia Ronnie Coleman
who sported an atrophied left lat muscle, a torn right quad, and a considerable
lack of confidence. As one very astute member of the press
pointned out, Ronnie looks like "a wounded warrior". This poor showing might just be what it takes
to get Ronnie to call it a career. That,
however, remains to be seen.
7-10th place is a battle between Silvio Samuel,
Gustavo Badell, David Henry, and Johnny Jackson.
In my humble opinion, as long as Victor Martinez gets "drier",
rather than smoother, I can see Big V walking away with the coveted SANDOW
TROphy. Before we go awarding any 1st
prizes out, let's remember that we're talking about the sport of bodybuilding
and, in bodybuilding, anything's possible.
