Mr. Olympia News Flash
Heath Repeats

The 2012 Mr. Olympia is a wrap! Reigning Mr. Olympia Phil Heath has succeeded in his first title defense. Heath was pushed to the edge by Kai Greene, but the champ held on for the win. It was a battle of shape vs. freak. Both men were conditioned, both had plenty of muscle, and both had some flaws.

Heath was in shape and brought the striated glutes we’ve come to expect, but he lacked the pop and fullness we saw in 2011. That left the door open for Greene and the two men were compared on stage to end the judging on Friday and Saturday. In the end, “The Gift’s” structure, shape, and balance were enough to carry him through to victory.

For Greene, it was his best ever Olympia showing. From the back he was downright freaky, but from the front and side his crazy muscles were outmatched by Phil’s round bellies and close to perfect shape.

In only his second Olympia, Shawn Rhoden was the surprise of the show in taking third place. Rhoden brought his best ever conditioning to compliment his superior shape and symmetry. He’s the quickest rising star in bodybuilding and a threat for the title in years to come.

Fourth went to 2008 Mr. Olympia Dexter Jackson. The Blade was the best he’s been in awhile and let everyone know he’s far from done. Fifth went to Branch Warren and sixth to Dennis Wolf.

Joining the Mr. Olympia on stage tonight was the Olympia 212 Showdown, but this contest was not so close. With three-time champion Kevin English opting to sit out, it was thought to be wide open – that idea disappeared when Flex Lewis hit the stage. He used a year off and new 212 lb. weight limit to his advantage coming in at a shredded 205 lbs. In past years his back was said to be a weakness, but in 2012 it was dense, wide, and detailed. Add to that his trademark striated glutes and Flex had the goods to win every back pose. He was just as good from the front making a complete package that could not be beat. Flex Lewis is now an Olympia Champion.

In second, 2008 202 Showdown Champion David Henry showed up ready to reclaim the title. After spending a year overseas serving his country, Henry showed he is back to form and a tough man to beat. The Giant Killer displayed no noteworthy flaws, but on this night he simply got beat. Flex was just a little bigger, a little harder, and little better.

Third went to the ultra shredded Eduardo Correa. While he might have been the most peeled bodybuilder in the building, he lacked the structure to beat Lewis or Henry.

Last but not least, the Figure Olympia crowned a new/old champion tonight as 2010 Olympia Champion Erin Stern won back her title. Stern evened the Olympia score with 2009 & 2011 Champion Nicole Wilkins and now both ladies are two-time champs. Stern was statuesque, well conditioned, and in her best ever form.

Third went to Candice Keene, fourth to Heather Dees, fifth to Mallory Halderman, and sixth to Teresa Anthony.
