After taking fifteenth at Nationals in 2005, David Schachterle took a few years off from competition. He resurfaced on the national stage this year at the Jr. USA’s, winning the Super Heavyweight Class.
Currently working with George Farah, this former fifteenth place finisher plans to pack on fifteen pounds of muscle before we see him compete again at the USA’s in 2011.
Read on to see to see if that plan is working, what he says about tattoos affecting placing, and what he thinks about his time spent living in New Zealand.

AZ: You won the Super Heavyweight class at the Jr. USA’s. I went back to see what Shawn Ray said about you during the play-by-play. He noted you were big and thick, and that your entire chest area was covered by a tattoo. What do you think about your tattoos being mentioned in the play-by-play? And do you think tattoos can effect placing?
DS: Shawn has always been one of the bodybuilders that I looked up to when I read the old Flex magazines. He is very honest and blunt about his views in bodybuilding. His comments in the play-by-play are usually spot on.
He had only very positive things to say about my size, thickness, back width, color, and crowd support. He mentioned my chest tattoo, and I didn’t mind. The tattoo has become part of my trademark as a bodybuilder, and the fans of the sport love it. Not only do people recognize me for my physique, but for the tattoo as well.
As far as contest placings and the tattoo go, I've never been judged or marked down points for having it.
I think in the 80's and 90's, it might have been frowned upon. Today, so many competitors have them, it’s not uncommon. The judges are very fair and well-trained. The physique, conditioning, symmetry and balance are what's judged, primarily. I really don't think my tattoos effect placing at all, at least they haven't so far.
AZ: Speaking of that tattoo. You mentioned you got it while living in New Zealand. What took you there?
DS:I went to New Zealand to play on All-Star American Football Team. We toured the country and played other All-Star Teams; we also played some rugby teams.
I stayed with a host family there and learned the South Pacific culture. It was a great experience. The people there are beyond nice and treat American people great. I miss the place a lot!
AZ: What do you think kept you from capturing the overall title at the Jr. USA’s?
DS: I was defeated by Lorenzo Jones for the overall.
The reason for my loss was simple: Lorenzo was in better shape in his glutes and hams.
That was his 6th show of the year, and he was in excellent shape!
AZ: I have some contest history of you starting in 2003, but it looks like you took off from 2006 to 2008? Why? What was going on during those years?
DS:I took off 2006-2008, because I wasn't focused on bodybuilding.
When I decide to do a show, I only do it to win, and to better myself from the last show.
At that time, I wasn't capable, mentally, to do that, so I didn't compete. It made me respect the sport more, and I train even harder, now, because if that lost time.
AZ: You’ve obviously got some size, since you’re a super heavy. Were you athletic in school, or is training something you’ve only done for a little while?
DS: Actually, I never touched the weights in high school. I just didn't like them at that time.
I was into sports big-time, though. I played basketball and was an All-State selection.
Football was my love; I was All-State and Super 25. I went on to play college football and started as a freshman at corner back and kick returner.
Those sports paved the way for me to excel in bodybuilding.
AZ: I hear that you’re working with George Farah and planning to put on fifteen pounds of muscle before the USA’s. How is that going? Are you on track to see these results?
DS:I have known George for three years. I decided to team up with him again for the USA in July, because he is by far the best at what he does.
My plan is to add fifteen pounds of muscle for the USA. He has put the program together for my offseason, and I think we are right on track to make major improvements.
I will send pics to you in three months to update progress.
AZ: Is there anyone you would like to thank?
DS: I would like to thank my major sponsors: ISS Research and their new hardcore line, MPR; Mike Crane Law Firm; Jason Randolph Designs, and Richard Stone at tkonutrution.com.
I would also like to thank all my family and friends that support me in this sport, as well as Lee Thompson and the NPC Texas.
