MD Magazine: September 2014 Issue

Kai Greene stands boldy on this month’s cover, the pinnacle of muscular development and a formidable presence to behold. It’s no accident that the New York skyline is behind Kai, as both the East Coast and the Predator are strong indications of things to come.

Brooklyn-born Kai has emerged as a prime contender to snatch the Sandow from three-time Mr.Olympia champion Phil Heath, while the East Coast – New York in particular- has emerged as the new Mecca of bodybuilding.

sept1With his astounding package of thick mass, muscle density deep separation, unique muscle shapes and truly masterful posing presentation, Kai Greene is a living sculpture of a champion and has the mindset of a warrior. In “Move Over, Spider-Man: Kai Greene Is New York’s Biggest Superhero Attraction! Peter McGough gives us the inside story of Kai’s battle plan as he zones in on the Mr. Olympia title. “I made him bleed and he’s still bleeding,” Kai said of Phil Heath. “Any entity that can be forced to bleed against its own will can be beaten, be killed, can die.” George Farah tells us why Kai will win the 2014 Mr. Olympia.

Another Brooklyn beast is Akim Williams, a large-carat diamond in the rough 5’10” and 255 pounds. He squats 800 pounds without a belt! In 2013, Akim repeated the feat of his training parter, Juan “Diesel” Morel, by winning the super heavyweight and overall titles at the IFBB North American. In “Extreme Akim! Heavy-Duty Leg Blasting With Rookie Akim Williams,” find out how Akim trains his monster wheels.

Training at Bev and Steve’s Powerhouse Gym, Max Charles saw plenty of pros and top amateurs, so the standards he held himself to were extremely high. These high standards from the Bodybuilding Mecca, coupled with Max’s unique unorthodox training and nutrition methods, have given him a pair of guns that could blast through New York’s famed Howe Caverns. Get his arm workout in “Charles to the Max! Arm Training With Rookie Sensation Max Charles.”

sept7New Yorkers Jon De La Rosa and Juan Morel both had very strong spring seasons, with Jon third in the Toronto Pro and Juan winning. Jon and Juan have been best friends for years and Team MD athletes for a while now, but we’ve never featured them training together. Their day of mutual delt destruction came with “New York Bros Train Shoulders: Jon De La Rosa and Juan Morel’s Dominican Delt Demolition.”

New York has its share of power couples, such as Governor Andrew Cuomo and Sandra Lee, but even the governor isn’t quite as powerful as the “New York Power Couples.” Get to know Jonathan and Swann De La Rosa, and Marco Rivera and Yeshaira Robles, the 2014 New York Pro Bikini Champion.

sept8Casual observers who don’t know the personal histories of Kai Greene and Victor Martinez miss the deeper meaning of watching these two muscular marvels training together. Both men were hatched from some of the roughest neighborhoods in New York City – Brooklyn and Washington Heights and grew up without most of the things that the more fortunate children of the suburbs take for granted. They weren’t supposed to become success stories, but they did. To emerge from an environment and become a star in a sport where precious few athletes ever turn professional and fewer still make a living at it, truly is exceptional. Kai and Victor are exceptional bodybuilders and exceptional men. “New York’s Finest: Victor Martinez and Kai Greene: The Dominican Dominator and The Predator Train Back and Arms.”

New Yorkers have always done things differently. There’s nothing laid-back or wishy-washy about them. New Yorkers drive faster, curse more and walk a little faster. They are more hardcore than the rest of the world, and they tell it like it is. A lot of people do like it, as the bodybuilding universe has witnessed the dawn of the new Bodybuilding MECCA, far removed from California. In “The Evolution of a “MECCA” How the Pulse of the Hardcore Gym Culture Headed East,” learn more about Bev and Steve’s Powerhouse Gym in Syosset, New York, where competitors feel at home and respected like nowhere else n the world.

The rest of the book is packed to the binder as usual – with all the latest cutting-edge research and information on bodybuilding by the industry experts and insiders who make it all happen. See you next month!
