Ghrelin Agonists: The Ultimate Offseason Mass Builder?

For an effective offseason, putting on quality muscle mass is essential, however it's not as easy as it seems. I am privileged to know two of the top trainers in the bodybuilding industry: George Farah and Hany Rambod. Often when they work with new bodybuilders for their offseason prep, many bodybuilders will tell them, "There is no way I can eat that much food!" Putting on size means eating more food, don't expect to look like Jay Cutler while eating like a figure competitor. Many bodybuilders may want to look into EAT TO GROW at which delivers clean protein sources directly to your home at the most affordable price. Their foods help you gain the most muscle with the least amount of fat through their natural selects of turkey and chicken, bison burgers, seafood and low fat beef cuts. You may have all the food in the world, but if you don't have an appetite then you are going to run into trouble. That's where medical pharmacology can help! Doctors are constantly looking for modern day pharmacological drugs to keep patients anabolic and stimulate appetite, for example patients undergoing chemotherapy or patients with kidney disorders often suffer cachexia or muscle wasting. The most interesting pharmacological drug to date for increasing appetite is Ghrelin and Ghrelin agonists which maybe the perfect drug for the offseason bodybuilder with a poor appetite. Many bodybuilders may not feel hungry after resistance exercise which may be due to decreases in Ghrelin, in fact a recent study reported that Ghrelin was significantly depressed during and after an intense bout of resistance exercise, which may explain why many bodybuilders have no appetite after exercise8.

Ghrelin is a peptide hormone produced by the stomach and also by a variety of other tissues that is secreted predominantly by the stomach in response to fasting1. The sum effect of ghrelin is an increase in appetite and food intake, which, when coupled with ghrelin-mediated anti-inflammatory activity, have led to the current interest in the use of this agent in human cachexia or counteracting human wasting disorders, but bodybuilders looking to ramp up their appetite may also want to look into this drug. A previous study reported that ghrelin is a potent releaser of GH in normal subjects with a dose dependent pattern. In fact, Ghrelin is one of the most potent GH secretagogue's to date. Ghrelin has recently been shown to enhance appetite and improve quality of life in patients with wasting disorders. Here are a few studies of the potential benefits of Ghrelin for increasing appetite and enhancing lean body mass:

a.) One study examined 7 cancer patients with impaired appetite; they were administered a single dose of synthetic human ghrelin or placebo in a randomized crossover design. A significant increase (+31%) in the consumption of calories from an ad libitum or free feeding buffet meal offered immediately after ghrelin infusion was documented3.

b.) One study with adults with multiple cancer types and cachexia who received either 2 or 8 µg of human ghrelin/kg as a 60-min infusion before lunch on 2 study days, 7 days apart, in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, double crossover trial. Ad libitum meal food intake tended to improve during ghrelin admination4.

c.) In a randomized, double-blind, crossover study, 9 patients with dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease and protein-energy malnutrition a single subcutaneous dose of ghrelin or placebo, followed by provision of a buffet meal. Administration of ghrelin resulted in a marked increase in food consumption meal energy intake (204% of placebo), and energy intake remained 57% higher in the ghrelin period than in the placebo period5.

d.) Human's given Ghrelin (2 µg/kg twice daily intravenously) for 3 weeks to cachexic patients with COPD in an open-label study. After ghrelin therapy, significant increases from baseline measures were observed for body weight (+1 kg or +2%), LBM (+0.7 kg or +1.8%), food intake (+9%), and hand grip strength6.

e.) In another unblinded protocol, this investigative group administered human synthetic ghrelin (2µ/kg of bodyweight twice daily intravenously) to 10 patients with congestive heart failure for 3 weeks. Ghrelin increased lean body mass and significantly improved hand-grip strength, left ventricular ejection fraction, workload, and peak oxygen consumption during cycle ergometry exercise; these parameters remained unchanged in 8 patients who did not receive ghrelin7.

Ghrelin Agonists...MK-677 and Amamorelin: Orally Active Ghrelin Secreatagogue's

There has recently been a approved orally administered ghrelin receptor agonist. Very limited data on the effects of ghrelin receptor agonists are published; however the studies have shown positive impacts on appetite stimulation. In a pilot, randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled, dose-escalation phase I study, researchers studied an orally available ghrelin mimetic called MK-677 in healthy volunteers. Results showed that the agonist produced a dose-related increase in body weight without dose-limiting adverse effects9. These authors also recently published data from a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study that evaluated the short-term effects of this agent (anamorelin). Anamorelin was well tolerated, significantly increased blood GH concentrations at all doses, and sustained increases in blood IGF-1 concentrations compared with placebo after 5–6 d of treatment. Significant dose-related increases in body weight occurred that were directly correlated with changes in IGF-1 concentrations10. In a pilot double-blind trial in cachectic patients with multiple cancer types, oral anamorelin (50 mg/d for 12 wk) significantly increased LBM by1.3% compared with placebo and was well tolerated11. Finally, in a study published in the Annuals of Internal Medicine, The ghrelin mimetic MK-677 enhanced pulsatile GH secretion; daily MK-677 significantly increased GH and IGF-I levels to those of healthy young adults without serious adverse effects and significantly increased lean mass over 12 months12. Although there are only a few studies, the research is strongly suggests that appetite can be enhanced by the use of orally active secretagogue's.

The Over the Counter Natural Appetite Stimulant: ENGORGE

Not many bodybuilders want to get a script for a appetite stimulant, but now you don't have to! ENGORGE has taken the best science and created a natural ghrelin agonist that stimulates the appetitie.  In a recent study published in the Journal of Peptides, recent research indicates that Ghrelin is found in plants.  Thats right the appetitie stimulating effects of ghrelin is found in the leaves of certain plants.  To be precise, engorge contains extracts of these 2 plants which contain high levels of ghrelin in the plants13.

Want to know the "secret" to gaining muscular weight fast? and eat some more! That's the first thing that every big guy in the gym will tell you if you ask him how he builds muscle mass. End of story! No matter what you might think, if you're a "hardgainer" or someone who believes you're cursed by poor genetics for putting on size, the real problem is that you're almost certainly not eating enough. The average person thinks eating 3-4 times per day with a diet consisting of burgers, fries and sodas is enough to fuel muscular growth. But this is far from the truth. Bodybuilding is a very simple formula – eat smart, train hard, rest and stay consistent. Stop whining about being a hardgainer and instead ENGORGE yourself!

For packing on thick, massive muscle, consuming large amounts of clean calories are key. If you're not eating enough calories, you WILL NOT grow. Reducing your calories is great for dieting down, but if you're looking to add SIZE, you have to go in the opposite direction and increase your caloric intake. This may be difficult, but after 2 weeks of eating more than you're used to, it becomes almost second nature. You should aim for at least 20-25 calories per pound of bodyweight. So if you weigh 200 lbs, you should strive to consume a minimum of 4,000-5,000 calories per day to get significantly bigger. If you have a really fast metabolism, you may require as much as 25-35 calories per pound of bodyweight. This may sound like a lot (especially when you consider it should be healthy protein, carbs and fats, and NOT junk food), but that's where ENGORGE comes into play.

Ever find yourself not finishing your meals or find yourself saying I just can't stomach the food anymore? What if there was a way to go around all that and stop your body from saying you've had too much. Before we even eat, our body releases a hormone called ghrelin, which is the hunger hormone. It's derived in the stomach and tells the brain when its time to eat. Once ghrelin is released, your body wants to eat – and eat right away.  The chart below shows the amount of time ghrelin peaks in normal individuals. From the chart you can see this is 3 times daily. ENGORGE keeps your ghrelin peaks high, prevents them from dropping and allows you to consume more food frequently throughout the day.

Feeling full is a thing of the past.

Hunger stimulates the release of ghlrein from the stomach. It travels in the bloodstream to the hypothalamus, where it acts on the brain to cause stimulation of hunger. As you are eating, blood levels of ghrelin start to decrease as you fill your stomach with food. This causes the stomach to expand and release another hormone called CCK, which helps modulate digestive function as well as playing a sufficient role in causing the feeling of satiety. The satiety feeling of CCK seems to be a physiological way to help your body avoid overeating. ENGORGE focuses on CCK on the process by delaying release of the hormone's release in the bloodstream once food enters the stomach. Through the actions of ENGORGE's exclusive Stomach Volumizing Matrix, the stomach is allowed to distend farther and there's a delay in the signal of CCK. This is a key factor in suppressing appetite, thus shutting off the gastric feeling of fullness and allowing the stomach to intake more food! Remember, more food equals more muscle!

Now that we've increased our ability to ingest more food, we have to properly digest and process the food efficiently so it's utilized and shuttled into the muscles for unlimited growth. Research shows that 70% of the American population has imperfect digestion involving inadequate enzyme sufficiency. This condition results in minimal absorption and breakdown rate of food. ENGORGE increases this deficiency with an enhanced enzyme blend that encourages an outstanding rate of food breakdown.

The process of digestion starts in the mouth when we consume food and break it down with our teeth, tongue and saliva. The food particles then travel to the stomach where they are further digested by the acidic stomach juices. As food leaves the stomach and enters the small intestine, many digestive actives are released. These actives contain enzymes, which aid in the digestive process. These include amylase, which breaks down carbohydrates; protease, which digests proteins; and lipase, which breaks down fats. For the most efficient macronutrient breakdown and absorption, digestive enzymes are essential for keeping your body on point. Carbs and proteins need to be fully digested and broken down all the way to simple sugars (from carbs) and single amino acids (from proteins). ENGORGE contains a highly advanced, bio-engineered digestive enzyme complex called Anabolzyme. This enzyme complex is far more advanced than your normal digestive enzymes. Anabolyme forces your body to achieve maximal macronutrient breakdown, which greatly improves muscle-building potential while encouraging appetite stimulation and a failure to achieve satiety.

ENGORGE’s Revolutionary Bioengineered Enzyme Complex is Designed to Optimize Your Digestion and Maximize the Nutritional Value of Your MASS-BUILDING MEALS!

Xero Limits’ primary goal for developing Anabolzyme was to design a powerful biodynamic enzyme complex for bodybuilders and athletes on high-calorie diets to optimize the digestion of large meals. Ingesting more food is one goal for improving gains, but completely digesting and absorbing the food is the other critical step. Anabolzyme is designed to be used by bodybuilders during their mass-building programs to speed up the enzymatic breakdown and improve the digestion of large, high-calorie meals. This will not only help enhance your appetite, it will also allow you to assimilate your food better and get greater nutritional value from meals, thereby improving your body’s overall anabolism and muscle-building potential.

While people on ordinary diets have the ability to digest much of the foods they eat, as food intake increases the rate of digestion can slow down and become inefficient, causing incomplete digestion. During a mass-building program, the large amounts of food bodybuilders and athletes are required to consume are often more than the digestive system can handle. This inability to digest large meals properly can seriously minimize your ability to make the gains in muscle and body mass that you desire and cause severe side effects. Common side effects of high calorie mass-building diets include stomach bloating, loss off appetite, flatulence, burping and indigestion. These side effects are all attributed to the body’s digestive enzymes not being able to handle these large meals. Also, lack of proper digestion of the protein, carbohydrates and fats in these meals reduces their nutritional value and anabolic effectiveness. So even if you are eating enough food, you most likely won’t be getting the full impact and benefit from your meals because you aren’t properly digesting and utilizing it all.

In the development of ENGORGE, Xero Limits researchers sought to overcome the body’s digestive limitations on handling mass-building meals that are loaded with the protein, carbs and fats you need to consume to pack on size. Anabolzyme’s complex of digestive enzymes are precisely modeled to the human digestive system. This bioengineered complex of enzymes are designed to work in conjunction your body’s digestive enzymes throughout the entire GI tract to enzymatically break down the large volume of foods you eat and increase your body’s own digesting potential. Anabolzyme contains the specific type of digestive enzymes in the precise amounts to speed up the digestion rate of high calorie, nutrient-dense bodybuilding meals. By delivering these vital enzymes in the ideal proportions, Anabolzyme functions in tandem with your body’s natural enzyme system throughout the entire digestive tract to provide more complete digestion and better utilization of large mass-building meals.

ANABOLZYME – The First-Ever Quantitatively Bio-Engineered Digestive Enzyme Complex
Designed for Bodybuilders!

The development of Anabolzyme was the result of a monumental collaborative effort between the Xero Limits product development staff and the world renowned National Enzyme Company. The goal was to improve the digestion of high calorie meals to create better utilization of the nutritional value of proteins, carbohydrates and fats in the meal and also speed digestion and stomach emptying so that meal frequency can be increased throughout the day. Below is a graphical representation of the highly specialized TIM system used in the development of Anabolzyme. TIM is a unique patented technology developed by The Netherlands Organization Nutrition and Food Research that simulates the conditions of the human stomach and small intestine. Using this technology we can accurately replicate the dynamic environment of the stomach and small intestine when food is being digested and absorbed.

Upon extensive evaluation of the most vital digestion system processes and substances, the Xero Limits research team determined that the utilization of a powerful biodynamic digestive enzyme complex was needed to optimize the digestion of large meals, thereby improving the body’s overall anabolism and muscle building potential. Here is an overview of the digestion process and the enzymes involved.

1. Mouth
Food is mechanically broken down via chewing for particle size reduction and mixing with saliva. Enzymatic breakdown of food molecules starts from enzymes in saliva, such as alpha amylase, which starts breaking down complex carbohydrates.

2. Stomach
The rhythmic smooth muscle contractions of the stomach provide for mixing the food and gastric fluids. Enzymatic breakdown of proteins into smaller protein molecule fragments.

3. Intestines
Pancreatic enzyme complex and bile released into small intestine to complete enzymatic digestion of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids.

4. Large Intestines
Primarily for storage of non-digested food and water re-absorption.

In order to develop the most advanced and effective enzyme blend for the ENGORGE formula, Xero Limits researchers
consulted with the world’s leading enzymologists.

Using the TIM digestive model, the National Enzyme Company was able to prove the efficacy of digestive enzymes. It was the first study to show quantitatively that enzymes work throughout the digestive tract to improve digestion when compared to a control.

Results show that NEC fungal digestive enzymes survive the acidity of the stomach and improve the digestibility and bioavailability of proteins and carbohydrates in the lumen of the small intestine.

The designer Anabolzyme enzyme complex used in ENGORGE utilizes these specific research-proven enzymes in precise ratios in order to greatly enhance digestion and complete assimilation of food. ENGORGE is the only nutritional supplement to boast this clinically proven enzyme blend.

The Anabolzyme biodynamic digestive enzyme content was based on using a model caloric and macronutrient content of a professional bodybuilder’s meal composition and is designed to handle meals of up to 60 grams of protein, 100 grams of carbs and 20 grams of fat (over 800 calories). Typical meals for anabolic weight gain should be balanced between 30-40% protein 35 to 45% carbs and 15 to 25% fat.

Never before has a bodybuilding supplement undergone such extensive evaluation for efficacy in regards to optimal digestion. In addition to helping enhance appetite, hunger and meal frequency,
the development of Anabolzyme helps bodybuilders and athletes get more nutritional value from the diet to improve muscle building and performance.

For those bodybuilder's that just can't get food down. Ghrelin may be just what the doctor order for your offseason as it stimulates appetite but also has been found to stimulate GH and IGF-1 levels as well.
