No Regrets About My Hard Training

Flex Wheeler: Uncrowned Mr. Olympia

Of all the men who never won the Mr. Olympia, who do you feel should have held the title at least once in his career? This can go back as far as Robby Robinson, Tom Platz, Gaspari, Labrada, Christian, Shawn, Kevin, Nasser or Flex.

That’s an easy one, Flex Wheeler. I think Flex had the most perfect body ever. I was always a huge fan of his physique, even when I was competing against him. If I were a judge at the 1998 or 1999 Mr. Olympia, I probably would have picked him. But you know, it wasn’t up to me. I had more size and I was conditioned in areas he wasn’t, like the glutes, and that’s probably why I beat him. Looking back, I think it’s crazy he never won the Mr. Olympia.

No Regrets About My Hard Training

Ronnie, I’m curious about something. In light of the problems you’ve had with your spine and disks and so on, would you change anything about the way you trained all those years as a pro?

Nope! I get asked that a lot now. People want to know if I would have gone a little lighter or done my reps slower or whatnot. The way I trained is exactly the reason I looked the way I did, and I am 100 percent sure I never would have won a single Olympia otherwise, never mind eight. My body got banged up, but that’s how it goes. You show me one great athlete from sports like football, baseball, gymnastics, boxing, etc. who doesn’t have some problems with joints or something for the rest of their lives. When you push your body past places other people wouldn’t and you achieve something extraordinary in your chosen sport, there is a price to pay. I accept that, and I’m not bitter or upset about it, even with all the pain I’ve had and these surgeries.
