2016 CBBF Bodybuilding, CPD & Bikini Championships

Contest Report

Combining Beauty and Brawn!

In the first of its kind, Bodybuilding, Bikini and the new category of Classic Physique sought common ground in the middle of the nation to create a very successful mix! Held at the RBC Convention Centre in downtown Winnipeg, the event was live streamed courtesy of MABBA - MANITOBA AMATEUR BODYBUILDING ASSOCIATION, CBBF - CANADIAN BODYBUILDING ASSOCIATION, LIVE A JACKED LIFE CLOTHING CO. and KAIZEN CANADA. The event was a 'one show format', meaning finals/award presentations were held at the completion of each Pro Card eligible category.

Women's Bodybuilding

While not as widely participated in as Physique, Women's Bodybuilding did still bring together some high caliber athletes. In the Masters 45+ Class, long time competitor Dawn Alison placed 2nd to Newfoundland's Heather Manuel. From BC, Dawn has been an active member of the Fitness community for many years, her 'FitbodyBC' Team of athletes always represent well at competitions from regionals to nationals. She also placed 3rd in Open Heavyweight and 1st with partner Brandon Best in the couples division! A number of competitors from the 45+ group did double duty in Open as well, including class winners Faye Wlad and Robin Eve. Three strong contenders in Masters Heavyweight, Alberta's Pearl Binder won the class and the Overall Pro Card, good muscle size, shredded and vascular! Impressive non-masters competitors in the open division were Heather King in Light-Heavyweight and Overall Champion Nicki Chartrand in Heavyweight.

Men's Bodybuilding

Starting with Juniors, Quebec's Simon Ducharme was the clear frontrunner, has a bright future ahead of him in the sport...also took best poser award from amongst ALL Men's competitors! We'll return to the significance of younger competitors in a moment, look out world! Masters saw excellent competitors for both their age and in their respective Open Classes. Steve Marsh in the 50+ group also won Open Lightweight, while to no surprise for anyone from BC, Pieter Van Der Linde (fresh from his Provincials sweep) took Heavyweight and Overall Masters, receiving a Pro Card. To add icing on the cake, was named/acknowledged as the second Pro Card recipient in the Open Division, no small feat!

The photos speak for themselves as to the quality of the Open Class competitors. The largest class saw the 'best' showdown as far as the day/night went. Quebec's Khaled Chikhaoui and Ontario's Chris Bumstead sported 'Pro ready' looks... Chris is only 21 and if the name sounds familiar, he's the brother of IFBB Pro Melissa Bumstead who recently competed in fine form in the Figure Division at the Vancouver Pro Show, covered elsewhere on this website. Great genes, no doubt! Chris placed 2nd while Khaled took 1st and the eventual Overall title.

Men's Classic Physique

Despite it being a recently created category, the competitors are doing a good job differentiating it from Bodybuilding...different attire of course and more 'stylized' posing. The best poser award winner Cody Drobot very much exemplified that look. B Class winner Joey Flores took the Overall title and Pro Card along with a second card to C Class winner Gianmarco Alaimo.

Bikini

It bears repeating every year because it's true...the conditioning of these athletes keeps improving and is truly remarkable, no less of a rigorous road to Nationals than any other discipline! Some very large classes to judge, not an easy task. A minor detail, angle of pose, and one can easily be 'overlooked' or relegated to the next 'callout'.  A number of Masters A Class competitors also excelled in their respective Open classes, among them being former Alberta Overall Champion Marissa Rodriguez who placed 6th here and 4th in Open A Class. Long time Manitoba competitor Jayme Galloway just squeaked past her to take 5th in Masters. Saskatchewan's Michelle Espino took 1st Place. British Columbia took 5 out of the first 6 placings in Masters B Class, the exception being Manitoba's Kari Zylstra who placed 2nd...definitely in the 'bombshell' category (in an athletic way of course), looked very confident and 'owned the stage' with her presentation. BC's Hannah Ponting brought a very tight physique to take the top spot. A BC 'one-two' punch ruled C Class, Vivi Rubel taking first AND the Overall Master's title/pro card. A year of improvements and fine tuning gave Tabatha Kirkegaard the runner-up spot as well as 4th in her Open Class, definitely on the right track! Six Open Bikini Classes in all, competitive to the max. Alberta's Queeny Alfeche repeated her class win from Provincials in A, she and a number of other 'Full Force Fitness' teammates performed consistently well from show to show. Stunning teammate Elisa Giffin placed 6th in Open B Class. Speaking of which, Class B was the largest with 27 competitors so to emerge out of there in 1st Place is truly an accomplishment.

That was the case with BC's Tonya Olson, participating in her third show in a little over a month to quickly go through the ranks arriving at the pinnacle of the CBBF standings, not too shabby! In Class C, Manitoba's Melissa Hadden took first, the always consistent (whether it be the 'natural' events or the 'non-tested' ones) Jamie Baldo placed 2nd. Jennifer Dubois and Tasha Star took the next two spots, with another Alberta 'Full Force Fitness' athlete Navi Kaur placing 5th. Moving to Class D (toughest without a doubt), her teammate Nicole Rogers (former Alberta Provincial Overall Champ) brought her best package ever to the stage to take 4th, but considering ahead of her included a BC Overall Provincials Champion in Harpreet Pandher as well as the eventual Overall Pro Card recipient Yulia Berezina, enough said! If I have to predict a 'Star' of the future, it would have to be E Class winner and recipient of a Pro Card, Jade Atkinson. Beautiful lines and extremely photogenic. Last but not least, the tallest ladies had a statement or two to make. Of note was BC's Annette Mountford (no stranger to MD Canada) who took 3rd in only her first Nationals, great accomplishment! It was very close, with the top 4 in Class F separated by only 6 points. The experience and elegance of Ontario's Sarah Ainsley Harrison shone through taking 1st Place.
