Athlete Profile On Bikini Competitor Vanessa Chung

2017 BCABBA 'The Gym' Northern Classic

The 16th Annual Northern Classic was held on June 17, 2017 in Fort St. John, B.C. Promoter is IFBB Pro Jeni Briscoe and it is the last qualifying show before BC Provincials. It's always been a smaller show but some of the most successful competitors have emerged from here such as Alyssa Coppolino (WPD Overall BC 2016) and Harpreet Pandher (Bikini Overall BC 2015).

Top 3 Bikini Open Class 'A': Twinkle Ruparel - 3rd, Vanessa Chung - 1st and Monica MccFarlane - 2nd.

The largest and arguably most competitive/toughest class saw Vanessa Chung bring a refined muscle shape/size worthy of higher level competition as well as stage presence second to none. A post show photoshoot at Jeni Briscoe's 'The GYM' rounded off the weekend.

"Even though I have been in a competitive active environment my whole life (gymnastics, martial arts, school sports), I didn't truly begin my bodybuilding fitness journey until 2012. I had just left a very toxic relationship and realized I went from a healthy 'thick fit' size and had plummeted down to a very unhealthy 'skinny fat' level in just a matter of a few short months.

Realizing that something had to change, I began going back to the gym and really fell in love with the process of watching my body change, setting & reaching new goals, and just all around feeling healthy again. After almost a year of being back in the gym I watched a video of the 2013 Olympia bikini finals and was in absolute awe of these gorgeous athletes who were fit and curvy and still packed so much lean muscle onto their petite frames! I then decided I wanted to achieve that same svelte look for myself and maybe one day try competing.

After a few years of trial and error, I entered my first competition, LBMC 2015 and tied for 9th. I then competed a few months later at Westerns and placed 8th. After that experience, I wasn't quite sure I was ready nor had the physique I wanted to compete again anytime soon. But after reaching out to Darren Toma IFBB Pro of CustomBuilt Training and starting an intense offseason plan he convinced me I had what it takes to bring in a whole new package into the 2016 season. Which is exactly what we did and I ended up placing 1st in my class LBMC 2016 and 6th at the BC Provincials later that year. This lit the fire for me to do even better in 2017 and we set out again to bring an even tighter, leaner package to the FSJ Northern Classic."
