Relentless Pursuit: The Key to Success? Work Ethic
Presented by Allmax Nutrition
MD is proud to introduce a new column by Josh Wade, renowned as one of the hardest-working men in the sport as well as a prep coach with a solid reputation for client success.
Let me start off by saying I’m super happy to have this column and am really hoping to give back a little of what I’ve gotten from the bodybuilding industry. This column isn’t going to be controversial, negative or disrespectful. That approach might make things more interesting, but it doesn’t really help us grow as individuals— in or out of the gym. I’m about keeping things positive. We’re going to focus on the things you can control, like work ethic and nutrition. Hopefully some of what I share can help you reach your goals, even if one of them is the Olympia stage.
Train Your Work Ethic
It’s been said that I don’t have the best structure or genetics. So, what’s my secret? I have a tremendous work ethic. It’s not exclusive to bodybuilding. I apply an “all in” attitude to everything in my life. This includes my family, which is most important to me, and my business. However, it seems like work ethic— that innate belief that hard work is a large part of the reward— is a dying quality. I see people spending more time talking about their dreams than applying elbow grease to make their dreams a reality or developing a plan to get them started. They’re waiting for things to fall into their lap instead of aggressively seeking what they want, whether that’s a better physique, a better relationship, or a better career. You need to train your work ethic just like it’s another muscle group.
Be Purposeful
Make a plan and execute it. Having a solid plan allows you to minimize distractions and maximize productivity in the gym. I once read that Dorian Yates used to sit in his office and visualize his exercises, sets, reps and even the weight he was going to use! The point is that you need to be mentally prepared to give your most to every workout. So, if you don’t already do so, write down your plan before every workout. Make sure you include strategies to challenge yourself, like drop sets, supersets, isolation holds, etc. Then, push yourself and hold yourself accountable. To this day, I never start a workout without a plan in place.
Be Consistent
Fueling Workouts and Keeping Muscles Fuller
Josh, what types of products do you use around your training, and why?
Pre-workout:
1/2 scoop (25g carbs) Carbion+
1 scoop Pineapple Mango Impact Igniter
Intra-workout:
2 scoops (100g carbs) Carbion+
2 scoops Pineapple Mango Aminocore
1 scoop Pineapple Mango Impact Pump
10g Glutamine
5g Creatine
Post-workout:
10g Glutamine
1 scoop PB Choc Isoflex
1 scoop C&C Isoflex
My body is very insulin sensitive, so I love Carbion+ because it gives me immediate fuel due to its fast digestibility. It doesn’t have to sit in the gut to digest, which would take blood to the kidneys to aid in digestion and away from the muscle I’m training! Also by consuming Carbion+ intra-workout, my muscles stay fuller because it doesn’t deplete my stored glycogen from the carbs I’ve already eaten because it will use the Carbion+ as the immediate fuel source.
Impact Igniter is the best pre-workout I’ve ever used; it is decently high in caffeine to get me going but I never get jittery or crash from it plus it’s got a full 6g citrulline and 1g agmatine to increase blood flow and pump! Besides that, it has a full 3.2g beta-alanine to help buffer lactic acid and help me train longer and harder. It has multiple other ingredients but one of my favorites is the Lion’s Mane extract for a tremendous cognitive effect, which really helps with the mind-muscle connection!
Obviously the Aminocore (BCAAs) is a no-brainer intra-workout due to its ability to prevent muscle tissue breakdown, so I never enter that catabolic (muscle waiting) state especially with the Carbion+ I’m also ingesting intra-workout!
The new Impact Pump seems like it was made just for me, as I love the high dosage of citrulline so it can be used as a stim-free pre-workout; but since I take Impact Igniter pre, I use Impact Pump as an addition to my intra-workout cocktail, which maximizes my pump without the additional beta-alanine and caffeine that’s in Impact Igniter.
I add creatine for that immediate ATP production (fast-twitch muscle fiber strength) and also, it’s one of the best muscle cell hydrators.
I’m a big believer in glutamine and I take up to 30g daily for insulin sensitivity, gut health, immune system function and most importantly DOMS!
Then immediately post-workout, in addition to extra glutamine I take 2 scoops of Isoflex (isolate protein) to get fast-acting protein to jump-start the recovery (muscle repair) process ASAP!
