Your Mind Determines the Outcome

As with most things in life, the outcome of an event is determined by your mindset. When beaten do you give up or come back stronger and more determined? Here is a little story that hopefully motivates you to push harder, work smarter and never give up on your goals.

I’m no stranger to disappointment, but I pride myself on being mentally tough in the face of adversity. That said, I’m human and must admit I felt a bit discouraged after starting my 2019 bodybuilding season at the New York Pro on May 18, 2019, finishing seventh place. My physique was improving from show to show and after finishing fourth at the New York Pro in 2018 and knowing I brought a better physique to that stage in 2019, I had high expectations for myself. The competition was fierce, and the results had me questioning my future and place amongst the elite in our sport.

I had to check myself and remember why I do what I do. I love to place well, and a win is always the goal, but I love bodybuilding. I fell in love with a sport where wins are never cut and dried. As with any sport, you can’t win every time, so you must have a short-term memory. A quarterback may throw an interception, but his greatness is determined by how he responds his next time on the field. The sooner he forgets the last play, the sooner he’ll score that TD. Same goes for bodybuilding. Just because you don’t get the placing you want doesn’t mean you can’t show up next time improved and impress again. A loss is only a loss if you don’t better yourself from it!

After the New York Pro, I only had one week until the California Pro. With renewed determination, I buckled down and came in hard as nails, drier and more separated. I succeeded in achieving that granite look I am known for. Maybe I wasn’t as full as I could have been, but I was hell-bent on coming in so nasty shredded they had to notice! It worked as I finished a strong third amongst a great 15-man lineup.

A week later I was scheduled to compete at the Toronto Pro. Since I was so shredded for the Cal, I knew I had to bring in a fuller package so it would be a different look. Knowing my body, there was no way I could lose my nasty condition in one week, so I upped carbs (rice and oats) daily until my muscles were pushing so hard against my skin that I became more detailed, harder and grainier than ever before! The strategy worked and it was the best overall package of condition, fullness and dryness that I’ve ever brought to the stage. I finished in third place, again against a very tough lineup. Takeaway lesson for me: just because things don’t go your way doesn’t mean you give up and throw in the towel. It means you use it as fuel to push harder and become better than you ever thought possible. It’s another great reminder to not let your mind be a limiting factor.

At the expo the day following the Toronto Pro, I was approached by some of the biggest names in our sport. These are guys that I idolize as a bodybuilding fan myself and they gave me positive encouragement to keep going. “You’re so close,” they said. Also, the numerous fans I met there were encouraging me to keep pushing. “Your time is coming,” I was told, and that relit a fire in me realizing that sometimes a loss is more valuable than a win if it helps you improve.

Supplements to Build Muscle

Q: I don’t have a big budget for supplements, so in your opinion what would be the most beneficial for weight training and building muscle?

A: These are the four Allmax Nutrition supplements that I personally couldn’t go without:

1. Impact Igniter Xtreme

While Impact Igniter has been my main staple in productive workouts for the last few years, it’s recently been reformulated with a few key ingredients that has improved the formulation even more. The biggest additions in my opinion are TeaCrine, which greatly improves mental focus, Betaine for even better pumps and Grains of Paradise for an increased heat production while training. (The best pre-workout in my opinion for stimulation, mental focus and clarity and great pumps).

While Impact Igniter Xtreme is a high-stimulant pre-workout, I don’t get jittery or a crash from it, but if working out later at night you might want to assess your tolerance.

2. Carbion

This is an amazing, fast-digesting carb powder that I always use during training to immediately fuel my workouts. You need carbohydrates to fuel your muscles and delay fatigue while training, and Carbion really helps stabilize blood glucose levels to aid in performance without crashing. Plus, the added electrolytes help you replenish what you lose through sweat. Give it a try and you’ll feel the difference.

3. Aminocore

These are BCAAs I use during my workout to prevent muscle tissue breakdown. When you are training and breaking down muscle tissue, your body is searching for amino acids to repair damaged tissue. Sipping on amino acids while training helps prevent the muscle tissue from breaking down in the first place. As bodybuilders our biggest fear is losing our hard-earned muscle tissue. Although we know catabolism doesn’t happen that quickly, you can never be too safe. Plus, it tastes great while training.

4. Isoflex

This is a fast-acting isolate protein for post-workout recovery and muscle growth. Obviously, everyone has their own opinion but when it comes to Isoflex, I haven’t heard of anyone not liking it. The taste of all the flavors is amazing but my number one will always be chocolate peanut butter!

Strengthening the Immune System

With the COVID-19 situation, I’ve been getting a lot of inquiries as to which supplements can strengthen the immune system and help prevent infection. These are the supplements that I take every day year-round for immune system function and antioxidants, but they are even more beneficial at times of stress or sickness.
