Mark Anthony’s Classic Comeback

By Steve Blechman

When the Classic Physique Division was introduced in 2016, it was hailed by many as a return to the ideals of days gone by, when the best bodies were judged as superior rather than the biggest or the freakiest. The ‘80s was a decade many feel reached the pinnacle for physiques that exuded both classic beauty and rugged power, as witnessed in Bob Paris, Mohamed Makkawy, Berry de Mey, Lee Labrada, Francis Benfatto, and of course, the man who held the Mr. Olympia title for most of the 1980s, Lee Haney.

Hi-Tech athlete Mark Anthony is on the cover of this month’s MD as a tribute to more streamlined and classic physiques, as he transitions to compete in Classic Physique this year as a contemporary version of those legendary athletes. Mark was one of the first men to earn pro status in Men’s Physique when the division was introduced in 2011 and went on the next year to become its first Olympia champion. After six pro wins, he drifted away from competition for a few years but announced his return to competition in 2020. Find out how this popular athlete with the dynamite physique plans to return with an entirely new look in “Mark Anthony: Classic Comeback.”

The Classic Physique division has exploded in popularity through the years, and as Ron Harris explains in “The Rise of Classic Physique,” the fans also embraced Classic, a breath of fresh air in a sport where aesthetics and posing presentation had sometimes been lacking in recent decades.

Some pretty crazy things happened in bodybuilding in 2019; what could be in store for 2020? Will Shawn Rhoden be back for blood, foaming at the mouth to get his Olympia title back after being forced to sit on the sidelines in 2019? What’s the inside word on Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’sAthleticon event? Ron Harris and Giles Thomas put their collective 50-plus years in the sport and industry to the test in “2020 Visions: 8 Predictions for the New Year.”

Most bodybuilders want to be bigger, leaner, or both. You don’t understand why you’re not, since you feel you’re doing everything right. Maybe whatever you’re doing either never worked for you, or is no longer producing results. You need to make some changes if you want to see any real difference in your physique, and MD has some great ideas to get things moving in the right direction in “18 Changes to Pack on Muscle and Get Ripped in 2020!”

As he begins his prep for the 2020 Arnold Classic, Steve Kuclo one of the favorites to win. The ALLMAX athlete has filled out that big frame with plenty of dense, mature muscle and managed to keep his pleasing shape and small waist. With five pro wins to his credit, a top-five finish at the Arnold Classic and most recently, top six at the Mr. Olympia, Steve is now hitting his prime as a bodybuilder. Read more in “Prime Time Kingsnake: Steve Kuclo Is Hitting His Stride as a Pro.”

George “Da Bull” Peterson was one of the very best Classic Physique competitors— winning the 2019 Arnold Classic and placing third in the Classic Physique Olympia the same year. Now, this Redcon1 athlete plans to slay in the 212 division and deliver a bigger and better version of himself. Learn more in “The Reconstruction of George Peterson.”

Something I never thought would happen happened. Seems to be the way my career & life has been singing it’s song. By the grace of God I received an early Christmas present today. @musculardevelopment is a magazine I’ve been reading since I was a teenager. Front to back, back to front! Each and every month. In awe of all the bodybuilding icons and mega stars whom I admire & obsessed over that graced the cover of MD. I collected boxes and boxes of these magazines. My parents basement of my family home in Canada was running out of room for them all lol. When Mr. Steve Blechman (owner) of @musculardevelopment came to visit Mr. Jared Wheat (owner) of @hitechpharma & (director) @anthonyjpresciano at our @hitechpharma booth during Olympia weekend @mrolympiallc, I also had a chance to catch up with him after a few years of not seeing each other. He noticed I had made some improvements to my physique and gained some size. Mr. Blechman then suggested that it would be a great story to have me shoot the MD cover for the January 2020 issue showcasing my New Classic Physique after being an Olympia Champion in Men’s Physique. I thought he was joking or pulling my leg. But he was very serious. Things all lined up perfectly especially with the great relationship between my team @hitechpharma & @musculardevelopment. I had 4 weeks to get in super shape. @mattjansen put the plan together and we pulled it off with the day to day encouragement of @jenniferdorie_ifbbpro . I had the opportunity to work with @kingofcovers @jasonellisphoto who captured this shot for the cover. Seeing the final version today is very gratifying. I’m beyond grateful and appreciative to Mr. Steve Blechman, @musculardevelopment, Mr. Jared Wheat, @hitechpharma, @anthonyjpresciano, for making this dream happen for me. Life is all about timing. My gratitude goes out to you all for your kindness, support and Love. #WritingMyDestiny #DreamBig #NeverGiveUp #HiTechPharma #MuscularDevelopment
