Put Your Phone Away While Training?

“If you really want to focus on your craft and be the best bodybuilder you can be, you do need to put the phone away for the majority of your training sessions.”

Q: A lot of bodybuilders give you crap if you post any pictures or videos from your workout, because they say you need to put your phone away if you truly take training seriously. Social media is such a huge part of marketing yourself and sponsors expect plenty of content, so how are we supposed to balance that? What’s your take?

A:To an extent, I do agree that if you really want to focus on your craft and be the best bodybuilder you can be, you do need to put the phone away for the majority of your training sessions. Training to the best of your ability requires a great deal of focus. If you are constantly interrupting that focus by picking up your phone and recording all your sets, it will interfere with your intensity and concentration. At the same time, social media is a big part of how a lot of bodybuilders and other athletes make their living today. Because of that it is a necessity. You just have to find that balance where you can do both and it won’t compromise your ultimate goal, being the best bodybuilder you can be. When I train, I keep my phone in my gym bag and that’s where it stays most of the time. But if I do need to record a set, I take it out and do that, then put it back and finish my workout. That’s enough where I get some quality content to post, but not so much that it hurts my workout. I have to keep in mind that the reason I have 300,000 followers on Instagram is because those people follow me and want to be inspired by my physique or how I train. But what got me to that point where those people wanted to follow me? It was training hard and putting in work in the gym. You can’t ever compromise that for the sake of producing more content. It really is a balancing act.

Don’t Follow Other Classic Pros

Q: Do you follow other Classic Physique pros you will be competing against leading up to your shows?

A:Not really. You won’t ever find me searching their pages to see how they’re looking during our prep. I still end up randomly seeing them as I scroll through my IG feed. It’s impossible not to unless I blocked them! But I don’t want my mind playing tricks on me, and it’s easy to let that happen. Most of my focus is on my own social media accounts, and no one else’s. I make sure I’m putting out the stuff I want to, and that’s it.

Bodybuilders, Beefs and Smack Talk

Q: What’s your opinion on creating hype and excitement in the sport, the way Blessing Awodibu

did earlier this year with his “beef” with Nick Walker?

A:I can see why that could be good to get people excited and talking. It probably boosts ticket and pay-per-view sales for the contests because after all the smack talk, people want to see what happens. I get that. But I have never participated in any of that with other athletes and I never will. It’s just not me and my personality. It also depends on how it’s done. Sometimes these guys are talking like they’re going to get into a ring or an octagon and beat the crap out of each other. I’m like dude, you’re just gonna stand next to the other guy on stage and hit some poses!

What Makes a Great Coach

Q: You’ve had the same coach, Justin Miller, since your first NPC show as a Classic competitor in 2016. What makes the coach/client relationship you two have so solid?

A:Our dynamic is unmatched and goes way beyond that. We’re genuine friends who look out for each other. One thing I love about Justin is that even ahead of winning, his primary concern with me and all his clients is our health and safety. He would never have us do anything that could possibly hurt us just so we can look better. Justin is passionate and puts his all into his clients. For example, at one of the many Olympia contests where I got third place, he was so passionate about me winning that he became so upset I had to talk him down when I placed third. That’s the kind of coach you want. He should care just as much about you winning as you do.

One thing I also liked about Justin from the start was that he didn’t just tell me what was good about my physique. That doesn’t help you improve. He told me exactly what needed to be better and helped lay out a game plan to make it happen. I say this to all the competitors out there. If you’re hiring a coach to guide you, it’s critical that you put your own pride and ego to the side and submit to his guidance. Accept what he tells you and make the changes he tells you to with your diet, training, etc. If you won’t listen or worse, go against his advice, that defeats the purpose of hiring a coach. You’re wasting your money and both your time.

Even if I lost 20 shows with Justin, I would stay with him because I believe in him and his knowledge to get me where I need to be. Switching coaches anytime you don’t win is common. If I did that, I know it would take a long time for the new coach to figure out my body. It’s important to find a person you can trust and trust him! Things happen in a subjective sport like bodybuilding. Even the best teams in the NFL and NBA, with the best coaches, lose games. A great coach reviews why that happened and makes the necessary adjustments for next time.
