Old School Labs® Ambassador Breon Ansley Will Do the Arnold!

Will the Classic Physique Olympia Champ Add an Arnold Classic Title to his Résumé?

Before we talk about the Arnold Classic. I have to say your cover on the December issue of MD was pretty killer. How does it feel to be on the same cover as past greats like Flex, Kevin, Ronnie and Jay, just to name a few, have graced it in the past?

It’s a blessing. It feels wonderful, and it feels like I’ve arrived. Being on the cover of MD carries a certain prestige for sure. This is my first magazine cover, and I feel it’s only the beginning. But I feel very honored and privileged. I’m very grateful to Steve Blechman, the photographer Jason Ellis, and to Old School Labs®, for making it all possible.

There was no Classic Physique division at the Arnold Classic events for 2017. Were you hoping it would be added for 2018?

Yes, of course! The athletes wanted it, and so did the fans. There was a lot of buzz earlier this year because a lot of people felt Classic belonged in the event, and they were somewhat shocked it wasn’t there yet. Clearly Mr. Lorimer and Arnold felt it was time to bring it into the weekend.

It’s such a natural progression for the Arnold Sports Festival, especially in light of Arnold’s famous speech the day after the 2015 Arnold Classic. He said that bodybuilding needed to get back to the ideals of shape, symmetry, proportion, small waists and excellent posing presentation. What does that sound like to you?

He was basically describing the Classic Physique division that would be created less than a year later.

How did you receive your invitation?

I got an email from Jim Lorimer’s office. They congratulated me on my Olympia win, and let me know that the Classic Physique division would be part of the 2018 Arnold Classic IFBB Pro League events. They extended their formal invitation to me, and I said hell yes, I will be there!

My only concern, if I were in your situation, was that maybe there hadn’t been enough time to rest and recover from your 2017 season, especially in light of the fact that you competed both in May at the New York Pro, then again in September. Are you good to go again?

Oh, absolutely. I’m definitely well rested now. My mind is refreshed, and I have a new bounce in my step. I’m ready to rock for my Arnold Classic prep. I eased up on my training a bit after the Olympia, so my body is rested. More importantly, I feel rejuvenated mentally. The idea of becoming the first Classic Physique champion of the Arnold Classic while also being the reigning Olympia champ is highly motivating!

When do you start your prep?

My prep began last Friday, December 1, which was 12 weeks out. The show will be here before we know it!

Who is on your team for this one?

It’s the same team that took me to the New York Pro and Mr. Olympia wins. Brandon Gerdes handles my nutrition, and the Real Deal, Chris Cormier, is the man who puts me through my training paces in the gym. And of course, I have the full support of Old School Labs® and their products.

We will be following your progress for sure, and I want to let the MD viewers know that we will be shooting a video series documenting your road to the Arnold, starting very soon.

That’s right, Jordan Blechman and I will be working together to show you guys what it’s all about. Stay tuned to MD, and you can watch the whole process leading right up to the show.
