Next MD Cover: Sergio Oliva Jr.

Special 2018 Arnold Classic Issue!

Sergio Oliva Jr. is the most exciting new pro on the scene today. No one else has had the shoes to fill that this young man has, with his father being the legendary three-time Mr. Olympia from Cuba who was so ahead of his time and his peers that he was dubbed “The Myth.” Rather than ride the coattails of his iconic father, Sergio Jr. has carved out his own identity and made his own mark in the sport. After winning the NPC Nationals in 2015, some wrote him off as having peaked as a bodybuilder, never to make waves as a pro. That all changed in May of last year when he took the stage at the prestigious New York Pro and accomplished the rare feat of emerging victorious in his professional debut. That marked the day when the bodybuilding fans and media stopped referring to him as the son of one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time. Now, it’s clear that he is well on his way to being one of the very best in the world himself.

While Sergio Jr. definitely has some favorable genetics from his legendary father, the younger Sergio is very much his own man with his own identity, and has worked hard to rise to the top of professional bodybuilding. Sergio Jr. has always been honest with himself, and constantly strove to discover new methods and techniques that would help him improve. In “Old School Meets the Modern Age!Old School Labs® Ambassador Sergio Oliva Jr.’s Updated Training and Nutrition Methods,” Sergio Jr. gives MD readers, in his own words, a body part by body part breakdown of his physique and how he optimized it to win his pro debut.

This year’s Arnold Classic has one of the most epic lineups in years. Not only do you have two men who have already won the show, defending champion Cedric McMillan and Dennis Wolf, but you also have Dexter Jackson, a former Mr. Olympia who holds the record of five Arnold Classic wins. The Dutch Beast, Roelly Winklaar, is a favorite going in, and fans are excited to see Steve “Kingsnake” Kuclo return to the stage after a year and a half away. This month, we bring you a wealth of muscle-building and training tips from these five superstars in “Classic Training Secrets.”

William Bonac placed third at the 2017 Mr. Olympia. Some people had him second. Bonac has battled some of bodybuilding’s biggest names, and emerged victorious on many occasions. In fact, seven-time Mr. Olympia Phil Heath is the only man on the Mr. Olympia stage that Bonac has not beaten at least once. Bonac has been compared to both Kai Greene and Shawn Ray as he continues to gain further ground toward the conquest of the most coveted property in all of bodybuilding, as we learn in “William The Conqueror: This Former 212 B-lister Is Edging Toward Mount Olympus.”

Michael Toscano, iFORCE Athlete and top-level NPC heavyweight bodybuilder, began competing in Men’s Physique and transitioned into open bodybuilding, going from 196 pounds to 250 while keeping his shape and symmetry. Look for this rising bodybuilding star to continue his rise to the highest ranks of the NPC until he graduates to the IFBB Pro League. Learn more about him in “From Board Shorts to Beast!”

More might be better for things like money and sex, but too much training volume and frequency can sabotage your efforts to build more muscle mass. A lot of guys put out plenty of effort in the gym, but don’t get the results they are looking for. MD’s Ron Harris diagnoses why you might not be reaching your potential in “15 Training Mistakes – and How to Fix ‘em!” Training requires steely focus on the task at hand. If you are going through your workouts with an iPhone in one hand, you’re definitely not focused.
