Brandon Curry Aims to Make History

By Steve Blechman

Brandon Curry’s career as a pro bodybuilder began in 2010, but didn’t really launch until 2017 after adding 25 pounds of muscle mass after his first trip to Oxygen Gym in Kuwait. Two years later in 2019, Curry’s stock shot into the stratosphere as he first won the Arnold Classic, then went on to become the 15th Mr. Olympia. For the next two seasons, he focused purely on the Olympia, losing his title to Big Ramy in 2020 and again being narrowly edged out by the massive Egyptian for the win in 2021. Now, it would seem Brandon is seeking to recapture the magic of 2019, as he aims to make bodybuilding history at this year’s Arnold Classic

For the first time in three years, Brandon is returning to Columbus to battle for another Arnold Classic title, with the goal of once again carrying the momentum of that win to Las Vegas this December and earning another coveted Sandow trophy. Brandon Curry is not just a great champion but also a visionary, a bodybuilder who looks at the big picture, and we are honored to feature him on the cover of this month’s Muscular Development.

“If I can start this season off strong by winning the Arnold again, that gives me serious momentum heading into the Olympia later this year. I have an opportunity to set a new record and make history,” Brandon told MD.

Ron Harris spoke to Brandon as he prepped in Kuwait and discussed why he’s returning to the Arnold Classic, and also setting the record straight about Oxygen Gym in Kuwait and the unique opportunity that it presents to those aspiring to level up in the sport. Will Brandon be able to be the first man in history to win both the Arnold and the Olympia in the same year on more than one occasion? It’s a lofty goal, but Brandon is determined to make it happen. As Brandon Curry prepares to make history at the Arnold, things are clearly looking up for the 2019 Mr. Olympia and Arnold Classic champion. Brandon recently teamed with IFBB Pro Marc Lobliner, his business partner, to launch 015 Nutrition. Read more in “Brandon Curry: Back to the Arnold!”

The Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic began in 1989, a partnership between Arnold and Columbus, Ohio native Jim Lorimer. The Arnold, as it would become known, quickly grew in prestige and would go on to claim champions such as Kevin Levrone, Flex Wheeler, Shawn Ray, Ronnie Coleman, Jay Cutler, Dexter Jackson and Kai Greene. It became the “season opener” that would often give us a glimpse of who had leveled up as well as set the tone for the entire contest year. Through the years, the highly anticipated weekend has grown in both popularity and prestige into the Arnold Sports Festival, the largest multi-sport festival in the nation with more than 22,000 athletes competing in more than 80 sports and events. The Arnold lineup is always impressive, and the 2022 edition has outdone itself. This year’s Arnold is looking to be a revisitation of the show from 2019, which came down to a fierce battle between Brandon Curry and William Bonac, at that time the defending champion. Ron Harris takes a look at the outstanding bodybuilders who will soon be taking the legendary stage in Columbus in “2022 Arnold Classic Preview.”

Classic superstar Terrence “Ruff” Ruffin is on a roll right now. He’s the current Arnold Classic champion in the increasingly popular Classic pro division; he’s also second in the world by virtue of his sensational second place behind now three-time Olympia champion Chris Bumstead. Why is Terrence so eager to defend his title at this year’s Arnold Classic when he’s right there, just one step away from becoming the Classic Olympia winner? Giles Thomas finds out in “Ruffin Up the Competition.”

Bodybuilders are not the only athletes taking center stage at this year’s Arnold. Physique photographer extraordinaire J.M. Manion gives us a preview of some of the top Bikini and Wellness competitors in “The Women of the Arnold Classic.”

Biceps are the first muscle most bodybuilders ever dreamed of building to superhuman size, as they gazed in wide wonder at magazine and book photos of Arnold, Robby Robinson, Larry Scott, Albert Beckles, Boyer Coe, Ronnie Coleman and the rest of the arm gods that walked among men. We all dream of owning thick, peaked biceps that bulge forth from tight shirtsleeves and radiate strength and power. Few of us are completely satisfied with our current biceps development, and most see room for improvement. If that sounds like you, check out “Ultimate Biceps in 8 Weeks! All You Need to Know to Build Bulging Bi’s.”
