Regan Grimes: Mass Appeal

By Steve Blechman

Regan Grimes is that rare athlete who appeals to bodybuilding fans who want to see outrageous amounts of sheer size and those who favor aesthetics, bodybuilders with beautiful shape and symmetry. With 1.7 million Instagram followers, many people have taken notice of the 28-year-old Grimes, a fan favorite who has built a look that is both massive and aesthetically pleasing, making good on the predictions many had made of his future greatness when he first landed on the pro scene five years ago.

Regan’s transformation has taken place under the guidance of bodybuilding legend and coach Milos Sarcev, whom Regan teamed up with immediately following the 2021 Mr. Olympia. Until recently, Regan needed more overall mass to compare with the bigger men in open bodybuilding, but that changed rapidly, as he displayed a significantly rounder, fuller look as he placed second at the Legion Sports Fest and scored a pro win in Egypt last year. “I still want to keep my classic lines and my small waist, the big shoulders and flaring quads. I want to keep that look as I gradually add size,” Regan tells MD this month.

At Muscular Development we’ve also noticed the improvements in Regan’s physique and the upward trajectory of his career, and we are honored to feature this young gun and rising star on this month’s cover. Ron Harris talked to Regan about his rising stock in the IFBB Pro League in “Regan Grimes: His Time Is NOW!”

We’ve all heard the phrase, “check your ego at the door.” For purposes of training, a more accurate term that applies to some people is “check your ego at the gym door,” because an oversized ego and pompous attitude often constitute the greatest obstacles to success in bodybuilding. Is your big ego getting in the way of making gains in the gym? You might not realize it, but some ego-driven roadblocks to gains are outlined in “Egomania!8 Ways It Can Hold You Back.”

Brett Wilkin, another rising star, has only been on an IFBB Pro League stage four times, the first two as a 212, last summer at the Chicago Pro in the open class, and in March at the 2022 Arnold Classic. We first saw Brett’s potential at the Chicago Pro when he pushed Hunter Labrada to the very brink and nearly beat him. Hunter had him in the shoulders and arms, but Brett certainly stood toe-to-toe with him when it came to legs. They were full, thick, deeply separated and etched with detail. “Intensity is why I love training legs and why mine grow so well,” he tells MD this month. “You have to get in there and get after it. You need a combination of heavy weights, perfect form and all-out effort to get huge legs. Do the work!” Get Brett’s complete leg workout in “The Butcher Slices Up Thighs:Leg Training With Brett Wilkin.”

2008 Mr. Olympia Dexter Jackson’s has a whopping 29 pro wins to his credit, but Dexter’s impressive record has been taken out by IFBB Bikini pro Ashley Kaltwasser, or Ashley K as she is perhaps best known. Some bodybuilding fans might raise an eye eyebrow and say you can’t compare men’s open pro bodybuilding to Bikini. Giles “Tiger” Thomas sheds light on the situation and explains why Ashley K’s 31 pro wins and counting is so impressive, making this Team Hi-Tech athlete the best Bikini pro of all time with the most pro wins of any IFBB pro, in “Ashley Kaltwasser: The G.O.A.T. of Bikini.”

Milos Sarcev was one of the bodybuilding stars of the ‘90s, an era widely considered to be the pinnacle of pro bodybuilding talent, with athletes like Dorian Yates, Flex Wheeler, Shawn Ray, Kevin Levrone, Nasser El Sonbaty, Vince Taylor and Ronnie Coleman ruling the IFBB stages. Renowned for his shape, symmetry and consistent spot-on condition, Milos also gained a reputation as one of the most knowledgeable men in the sport in the areas of training, nutrition and supplementation, so much so that he became known as “The Mind.” When Sarcev retired, he was able to shift his focus toward helping other bodybuilders realize their full potential as athletes. His current roster includes Classic Physique standout Logan Franklin along with open stars Regan Grimes, Samson Dauda, Mokhamed El Emam and Jamie Christian. Recently Milos joined forces with JYM Supplement Science, a company founded and owned by Jim Stoppani, Ph.D. and operated by several men he’s known and worked with for many years. Milos will be collaborating on content for the JYM Supplement Science YouTube channel and their website, jymsupps.com to help untold thousands realize all their personal fitness and physique goals. The 2021 season was going very well for Akim Williams. In Puerto Rico, he had picked up his third career win on the way to a top-five finish at the Arnold Classic and his third time in the top 10 at the Mr. Olympia. As the year wound its way to a close, The Brooklyn Beast was a couple of weeks into his prep for the 2022 Arnold Classic and very satisfied with what he was seeing in the mirror when he was sidelined by the coronavirus. Now the MuscleMeds athlete is back up to a very solid 287 and pondering his options for the 2022 season. We will be seeing Akim on stage with his trademark monstrous size and jaw-dropping shape in the near future. Read his story in “The Brooklyn Beast Game Plan: COVID Knocked Akim Williams Down, But He’s Back Up!”
