Training Lowers Leptin Levels
How Exercise Fights Obesity
Leptin secretion is an important way the body regulates weight and fat. When you overeat, your fat cells release leptin, which increases metabolism and cuts appetite. Curiously, fatter people tend to have higher blood leptin levels. Obesity causes a resistance to leptin and may be one reason people have trouble losing weight. Dr. N.F. Chu and colleagues, from the National Defense Medical Center in Taipei, Taiwan, found that people with the highest leptin levels were the least physically fit. People who ran more than three hours per week had the lowest levels. Leptin levels in obese subjects decreased when they trained. Physical activity lowered leptin by decreasing fat mass and increasing cell sensitivity to the hormone. (Int J Obesity, 25: 106-114)
