Can You Take Spironolactone While on TRT for Hair Loss?

Q: Can I take spironolactone tablet 25mg while on TRT for my hair loss? Can’t find the topical form.

A: Spironolactone is an aldosterone inhibitor diuretic that retains potassium, the main intracellular electrolyte. The problem arises when prolonged use and abuse brings potassium to high levels, leading to myocardial arrhythmia. On the other hand, Aldactone is alternatively used in female competitors in order to block the hirsutism effect from AAS use. It has the ability to act as an anti-androgen in adrenals and that’s why it may potentially give you gynecomastia. This can have some benefit against androgenic alopecia, or male patern baldness, however it’s way more effective to use the 5-alpha reductase inhibitors such as finasteride or dutasteride (that is actually more potent by blocking both I and II receptors both in scalp and prostate) – along with minoxidil foam and ketoconazole shampoo. Of course, you should know that only these medications block the reduction of testosterone to DHT, but no other compound (mesterolone, drostanolone, DHT itself, AAS).
