Ladies With ‘Adrenal Fatigue’ and Dialing In Your Body

By George Touliatos, MD

Q: Dr T., any recommendations for a female, 44 years old who has elevated salivary cortisol levels during the day and borderline low DHEA level? She wants to compete in figure for the first time but her lower body is not “dialing in.”

A: The situation you describe refers to the so-called ‘’adrenal fatigue’’ or burnout,’’ in pure medical terms known as adrenal insufficiency. It’s a gradual process that takes place, depending on lifestyle, sleep and use of stimulants. Adrenals produce catecholamine adrenaline, which kicks up heart rate. Gradually, under prolonged physical and mental stress, along with insomnia based in the use of caffeine, clenbuterol, ephedrine and thyroxine, adrenal glands get toasted. Serum and salivary cortisol rise and later fall down to very low levels. DHEA is a secondary androgen released by the adrenals, which under a fatigued state it is also found crushed in blood. Cortisol is responsible for water and fluid retention and this is why this lady holds water and her thighs look smooth/blocky. She has to manage her stress by the use of certain supplements, plus improve her sleep (11:00 p.m./7:00 a.m.) and quit taking stimulants. Herbs like ashwagandha, rhodiola, valerian root and phosphatidylserine with B complex ensure that the central nervous system (CNS) will calm down and cortisol will become optimized. Moreover, the use of DHEA will support adrenal metabolism as well.
