Where Is the Sport Heading To?

By George Touliatos, MD

Another great champion left us on April 12, 2022 – Arnold Classic winner Cedric McMillan, at age 44. Within six months, we’ve lost two IFBB Hall of Fame bodybuilders. Cedric McMillan and 2018 Mr. Olympia Shawn Rhoden were both pronounced dead due to cardiovascular issues. There’s no doubt bodybuilding is an extreme sport and (usually) the higher you climb the ladder of success, the greater the risks. Medical prevention and harm reduction strategies seem obligatory in order to ensure longevity and a better prognosis. Health is the most significant parameter in order to achieve your goals. Take it easy with chemical enhancement and be careful with your overall lifestyle. Consult your physician, be outspoken in regards to your PEDs use, and follow regular blood work and other exams (U/S, CT, MRI). Remember that there’s no free lunch and one day you might have to pay the dues for your vanity. What differentiates a drug from a poison is the use versus abuse.

Bodybuilding is among the healthiest lifestyles, in cases where chemical enhancement is neglected. Nevertheless, the implementation of hormonal replacement therapy ensures longevity and wellness. Bill Pearl, Frank Zane and Jack LaLanne are unique cases. Eat clean, take your supplements, train consistently and sleep well. Stay away from stress and seize the moment. Health is wealth and life is a miracle. Embrace it and enjoy every day.
