Training on an Empty Stomach: Will It Kick in GH and Make You Bigger?

By George Touliatos, MD

Q: People believe training on an empty stomach will kick in growth hormone (GH) and make you bigger. Is this true?

A: Actually it’s the wrong perception. What GH does in the first place is break down adipose tissue, oxidizing fat cells. This occurs under a low-fed state, when insulin is low and glucagon is high – the hormonal environment for somatropin release. So growth hormone burns fat. Muscle growth comes out of the peptide released by the liver, known as insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), which is secreted under two conditions. First, after exogenous administration of GH. Second, after a meal high in calories and carbs, that will kick the pancreas for insulin release. Insulin and IGF-1 are tied in terms of secretion. This is how food becomes anabolic. Therefore, in order to grow you need either a higher amount of somatotropin to be injected, which will spike IGF-1 from the liver – or a caloric surplus that will trigger the two anabolic hormones: insulin and IGF-1. So training on an empty stomach will ensure catabolism of adipocytes, because lipotropic GH is high, while lipogenic insulin is low. Since insulin is low, then IGF-1 will be low too. Hence anabolic drive as well.

Preventing Heart Attacks

CT coronarography is a diagnostic method able to prevent heart attack (acute myocardial infarction). Computer tomography scans the myocardium, after the intravenous infusion of a dye that is spread through the coronary arteries of the myocardium. Calcium score detects the accumulation of a hard, calcified plaque inside the lumen of the arteries that may lead to stenosis and ischemia. Unfortunately, the CT scan is able to reveal only the hard plaque; that is actually of better scenario. The soft plaque made of cholesterol is able to detach and form a thrombus in a vessel. Zero calcium score literally equals minimal risk of cardiovascular disease. It’s the most accurate method of prognosis, compared to blood work, ultrasound in carotids, heart triplex and echo stress test of the heart. Health is wealth.
