Drop Sets for Bigger Muscle Pump

By George Touliatos, MD

Q: Should I add drop sets to my training routine?

A: Drop sets are an excellent choice for muscle glycogen depletion and caloric expenditure, when it comes to the cutting phase and definition is the main goal. Actually, it helps with muscle separation. The short intervals between sets (only 10 seconds) develop lactate production, and that equals intensity and the signaling of anabolic hormones (T/GH). The weight of either plates or dumbbells drops gradually and eventually we end up with light weight that is practically unbearable of lifting. Even though it deviates from the classic heavy-duty approach of low reps, this continued repetitions without considerable rest can result in enormous pump and blood supply. However, the muscle damage in fibers is missing, hence it’s not the standard approach for muscle growth. Nevertheless, it can protect joints from injuries and improve cardiorespiratory capacity. Arnold used drop sets extensively and he described them in his encyclopedia [The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding]. They were implemented during his final weeks before a show, in his preparation.
